In cosmetics, in France, the Ecocert , Cosmos , and Cosmébio certifications are major references for natural and organic products. Here are the differences between them:

Ecocert, what is it?

Ecocert is an independent certification body that was established in France in 1991. It certifies products in several areas, including cosmetics, agriculture, textiles, and more. In cosmetics, Ecocert offers two main labels:

Ecocert Ecological Cosmetics

This label guarantees that a minimum of 95% of the ingredients are of natural origin, with at least 5% of ingredients from organic farming.

Ecocert Organic Cosmetics

For this label, at least 95% of the ingredients must be of natural origin, and a minimum of 10% of the ingredients must come from organic farming.

Our Supreme Regeneration anti-aging cream and our Youth Concentrate serum are two examples of certified Ecological and Organic Cosmetic products certified by ECOCERT GREENLIFE according to the ECOCERT standard available on http://cosmetiques.ecocert.com

And Cosmos, what does that mean?

Cosmos (Cosmetic Organic Standard) is a harmonized European standard for natural and organic cosmetics, created in 2010 by five founding members: BDIH (Germany), Cosmebio (France), Ecocert (France), ICEA (Italy), and Soil Association ( United Kingdom). Cosmos also offers two main labels:

Cosmos Organic :

For this label, at least 95% of the ingredients must be of natural origin and at least 20% of the ingredients in the final product (or 10% for rinse-off products) must come from organic farming.

We can cite the Youth Cream Mask : 98% of the total ingredients that make up its formula are of natural origin and 33% of the total ingredients come from organic farming. This product is therefore logically COSMOS ORGANIC certified by Ecocert Greenlife according to the COSMOS standard.

Cosmos Natural :

This label guarantees that the products are 95% of natural origin, but there are no strict requirements regarding the percentage of organic ingredients.

This is the case, for example, for foot baths and sea baths : mainly composed of Guérande salt, a mineral and therefore non-organic in essence, they cannot be Cosmos Organic certified. On the other hand, they are composed of 100% ingredients of natural origin and are therefore Cosmos Natural certified.

Cosmebio, kesako?

Cosmébio is a French professional association founded in 2002 which brings together players in natural and organic cosmetics. It promotes the use of natural and organic ingredients in cosmetics and offers labels based on the criteria of the Cosmos standard:

Cosmébio Organic Charter :

This label corresponds to the Cosmos Organic label. It guarantees that 95% of the ingredients are of natural origin and that at least 20% of the ingredients in the finished product come from organic farming.

Ecocert, Cosmos, Cosmébio: what does that mean?

Cosmébio Eco Charter :

This label corresponds to the Cosmos Natural label. It certifies that the products are composed primarily of natural ingredients without specific requirements on the percentage of organic ingredients.

In summary :

  • Ecocert : Certification body that offers labels for ecological and organic cosmetics with specific percentages of natural and organic ingredients.
  • Cosmos : Harmonized European standard for natural and organic cosmetics, integrating the criteria of several organizations, with Cosmos Natural and Cosmos Organic labels.
  • Cosmébio : French association using Cosmos standards for its labels, aiming to promote natural and organic cosmetics.

These certifications assure consumers that products meet strict standards for natural and organic ingredients, environmentally friendly production processes and the absence of controversial substances.
